NCLEX-RN Hypermagnesemia Guardrails Cheat Sheet (Free Printable)
Free NCLEX-RN hypermagnesemia guardrails cheat sheet — printable study guide for nursing students. Every fact verified against authoritative sources.
If you are preparing for the NCLEX-RN, hypermagnesemia arrives as a chain: a lab value, then symptoms in a fixed order, then the next action. This cheat sheet walks the whole chain. First, the toxicity ladder: hypermagnesemia is a serum magnesium level above 2.6 mg/dL, deep tendon reflexes disappear near 12 mg/dL, and past that come hypotension, respiratory depression, and narcosis. Then the treatment block: circulatory and respiratory support first, then the antidote, 10% calcium gluconate 10 to 20 mL IV, then furosemide or dialysis for removal.
The exam tests it because one scenario can touch the threshold, the reflex checkpoint, the antidote, and a teaching point. Then the why: failing kidneys cannot dump magnesium, and magnesium antacids or purgatives plus kidney failure is the classic combination. Counseling follows from that risk: antacids for no longer than 1 to 2 weeks unless prescribed, certain medications spaced 2 hours from an antacid, and aspirin, iron, or multivitamins flagged to your doctor and pharmacist. To use it, read the blocks in order, drill each mnemonic, then quiz yourself on the numbers. The sheet's caveat: values vary by laboratory, so follow your facility protocol.
